AI’s impact on today’s world is profound and pervasive, touching virtually every sector and aspect of daily life. People’s opinions on AI are varied and reflect a broad spectrum of expectations and concerns. In the rapidly evolving world of artificial intelligence (AI), Rama Subramanian Damodaran has earned the recognition as a Guinness World Record holder for his relentless advocacy on AI and the positive impact it has on our future.
Rama Subramanian Damodaran is working as a Data program Director in Healthcare and he is transforming how Health care organizations can utilize the power of AI to better serve patients. His contributions span across other areas providing AI solutions to various issues faced by veterinarians in India. His innovative solutions utilize many of the algorithms RNN, Neural networks, Deep learning, which have become a cornerstone of modern AI research and applications.
Damodaran’s journey began humbly as a Programmer analyst and he rose through the ranks of a Director in IT with his passion and dedication to learn new technologies. During his two-decades long career, he has provided innovative solutions for companies across various sectors such as Oil & Gas, FMCG, Finance, Pharmaceuticals and Healthcare. He holds a Masters degree in Electrical Engineering and currently taking courses with The Wharton School to enhance his skills. In addition to his technical and organizational achievements, he has been a vocal advocate for digital rights and ethics.
The intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and healthcare represents one of the most transformative advancements in modern medicine. Currently in Hospice and Home health care he has determined that AI can have significant impact if adopted properly. He keeps abreast of recent technologies and research papers and found out that many Hospice and Home health providers must adopt AI which has tremendous impact the way patients are served. He proposes that usage of AI for reducing Re-hospitalization, fall prevention in Home Health would have the maximum benefit which would benefit the economy in saving costs in the form of unnecessary spend. For hospice patients, achieving peace of mind is crucial as they navigate the end-of-life journey. He feels that many Hospice care providers are yet to fully explore the areas of AI and Augmented reality to give the peace of mind these patients deserve.
His ability to bridge the gap between theoretical research and practical applications has been instrumental in translating AI advancements into real-world solutions. When asked about how to keep up with the ever-growing technology, he said “I am believer in keeping things simple”. He recommends using Python to keep things simple when it comes to programming for AI. Per him, Python language has many pre-built functionalities called libraries and there are many libraries available to code AI related algorithms.
Pragmatic approach to existing Healthcare problems:
Per WHO, there is a significant raise in the frequency of falls. Especially the elderly at Home and Nursing homecare suspectable for fall and generally these are recurrent. He feels the AI capabilities are underutilized in this area. According to the extensive study he has done IOT devices in combination with AI should see through that these numbers decrease significantly. He explains that out of the algorithms that are used KNN and CNN provide the optimal results.
Re-hospitalization is a significant factor for increase in Health care costs up to 18 to 20 billion USD per year in the US. Per him AIs capabilities are under utilized here using predictive models using XAI. There is recent research to improve on existing predictive model by adding information on how to reduce these risks. He is closely following the developments to improve this via a feature to retrieve historical health records which will improve the predictive model.
AI solutions in other fields:
During his discussion with Vets in India in 2023, he found significant time of those doctors are being wasted in paper work. He has advised the use of AI to reduce the load saving time spent in paperwork. His advice to use AI in field of Veterinary pathology significantly is expected to reduce the misdiagnosis of the pathogens reducing diagnosis time and increased accuracy.
He also suggests tackling a major supply chain issue in demand forecasting using various algorithms analyzing sales trends, Live market data and feed from social media.
Social Contributions:
Beyond his professional achievements, Rama S. Damodaran is a dedicated social worker. He works closely with an old age home in India called New our home trust in Pudukkottai, Tamil Nadu, India. He works closely with the Manager there trying to arrange for all basic necessities for the elderly on a monthly basis.
He takes guest lectures in creating awareness for AI. Recently, based on invitation from Sri Barathi Arts college for Women, he conducted a free guest lecture on AI Awareness for over 1000 students. They were greatly benefitted in understanding the steps that need to be taken to enter into the field of AI.
